GIN transposons: genetic elements linking retrotransposons and genes.
In a previous work, we characterized a gene, called Gypsy Integrase 1 (GIN1), which encodes a protein very similar to the integrase domains present in Gypsy/Ty3 retrotransposons. I describe here a paralog of GIN1 and GIN2 and show that both genes are present in multiple vertebrates and that a likely homolog is found in urochordates. Surprisingly, phylogenetic and structural analyses support the...
متن کاملScreening for Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
A throat swab from a 9 year old girl with pharyngitis yielded a non-toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae var mitis and Streptococcus group G. C pseudodiphtheriticum was isolated from the throats of two of her four brothers. In each case the isolate was sent to the reference laboratory before full identification. The growth was found to be mixed for one brother; the other isolate bein...
متن کاملGenetic Factors in Corynebacterium Diphtheriae Conversion1
The conversion to toxigenicity of nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae strain C4 requires the active and continued participation of a specific bacteriophage (Groman, 1953, 1955). The facts supporting this statement are: (1) lysogenization with 3 phage results in a simultaneous change to toxigenicity, and (2) reversion of toxngemnc cells to the nonlysogenic state results in a return to the n...
متن کاملNovel Corynebacterium diphtheriae in Domestic Cats
Novel nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated from a domestic cat with severe otitis. Contact investigation and carrier study of human and animal contacts yielded 3 additional, identical isolates from cats, although no evidence of zoonotic transmission was identified. Molecular methods distinguished the feline isolates from known C. diphtheriae.
متن کاملMAR Elements and Transposons for Improved Transgene Integration and Expression
Reliable and long-term expression of transgenes remain significant challenges for gene therapy and biotechnology applications, especially when antibiotic selection procedures are not applicable. In this context, transposons represent attractive gene transfer vectors because of their ability to promote efficient genomic integration in a variety of mammalian cell types. However, expression from g...
